Quarterback John Louis rushed for 114 yards and five touchdowns and passed for
another score as the visiting
Austin Christian Cougars blanked
New Braunfels Christian Academy 50-0 in six-man football action Saturday
at
Canyon Middle School. The game was called with less than a minute
remaining due to the 45-point mercy rule.
The Wildcats were shut out for the second straight week, but both games have
been against strong Austin-area teams. Austin Christian was coming off a big
40-21 win over perennial state power
San Antonio New Life while last week's foe, Summit Christian, was a
playoff team last season.
We're very young and prone to mistakes,' emphasized NBCA head coach Jim
Bergeron, but I'm real proud of these young men and how they fought to the end.
Junior Nathan Barecky led the NBCA offense with 86 yards rushing on 13 carries,
but had to sit out more than a quarter's worth of action due to heat exhaustion
and cramps and the fact that he was playing full-time on both sides of the ball.
We proved we could move the ball,? Bergeron said. But we had a lot of guys
cramping up at bad times. Indeed, the Cats drove inside the Cougars' 20 twice in
the first half on the strength of Barecky's legs, but costly penalties and his
untimely cramping caused both drives to stall.
A possible benefit of the heat-related stress was the emergence of sophomore
Cameron Jenkins, the Wildcats' backup signal-caller. Starter Andrew McComb, also
a sophomore, had to sit extensively and Jenkins shook off some early jitters and
completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 45 yards with one interception.
Defensively, the Wildcats didn't have an answer for the speedy Cougars. In
addition to Louis' yardage, tailback Evan Tuuk piled up 119 yards and was
on the receiving end of Louis' 33-yard scoring strike.
The leading tackler for the NBCA defense was senior Michael Edge, who was all
over the field with eight stops. Barecky and senior Jim Crider brought down
seven Cougars apiece while junior Darren Mycue and
McComb each had five stops. Junior Zac Starnes made three tackles and
Jenkins
had two.
The win pushes the Cougars' record to 2-0 while the Wildcats fall to 0-2 on the
young season. Next week, NBCA makes its first road trip when the Cats travel to
Bryan to take on Allen Academy at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
